The Arab Orchestra of San Francisco needs you! Yes you, great instrumentalist interested in performing Arabic music on a professional level.

What you get

1. Training in Arabic music theory, style, and practice
2. Build a repertoire of Arabic art music pieces

4. Play in the most prestigious Arabic orchestra in the US
5. Improve your ability to hear intonation (Arabic music uses microtones as small as one nineth of  a step)
6. Improve musical memory (we emphasise ability to memorize music)
7. Learn to improvise and play solos in the Arabic style
8. Honorarium for performances

What you give

1. Commitment to participate in rehearsals (Sundays 3-6 PM) at La Pena cultural center in Berkeley
2. Commitment to listen to Arbaic music, especially the pieces that we are working on
3. Commitment to practice the music (approximately 1 hour a day)

Qualifications

1. String players (no experience in Arabic music required) who are professionals or advanced students (music majors in a music program or conservatory) who are confident in their technique and musicianship. OR
2. Professional or advanced students who play Arabic instruments (currently in need of qanun) confident in their technique and musicianship

What we look for in the audition

1. Play a piece in any style from memory (approximately five minutes in length)
2. We listen for ability to deliver a convincing rendition of the piece as a solo
3. Confidence and stage presence
